Chocolate Glazed Donuts

One of my friends requested me to make a recipe that the kids would enjoy eating…. and the first thing that struck me, was chocolate glazed mini donuts … Over the weekend, I had to baby sit 6 kids and I made a batch of these easy homemade donuts and gave it to them to  “taste test “…. Within a few minutes, the donuts simply disappeared from the plate and my hubby ( who actually loves them !!!) , barely managed to sneak couple of them. Also, making donuts is a fun activity you can do with your kids ….. especially the part where you “dunk” the donut in the chocolate glaze … Enjoy ! 🙂 ~ Kamakshi

Prep Time : 30 mins (Dough : 1 hr)                                         Cook Time : 30 mins
Serves : 25 Mini Donuts

INGREDIENTS

For the Donuts :

  • 3 1/2 Cups , all purpose flour ( Maida)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk OR 1/2 cup plain yogurt mixed with 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp Butter / Oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 egg , beaten
  • 1/2 tsp, Nutmeg powder
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon powder
  • 2 cups Oil for Frying

For the Chocolate Glaze :

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp Cocoa
  • 3 tbsp Milk
  • 1 tsp Vanilla essence
  • 1-2 cup powdered sugar

METHOD

For the Donuts :

In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients i.e. flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg. In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk, eggs and melted butter. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and fold together and make the dough. Cover with a plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 1-2 hours.

Roll out the dough on  a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick and using a donut cutter cut the dough into round shapes with a hole in the center.

Heat oil in a pan. The oil should not be too hot ( the donut will become brown too soon and the dough will be raw in the middle)  or too cold ( the donut will absorb more oil) . To check if the oil is ready, add a small piece of the dough to the oil and within 4-5 secs the dough should raise to the surface.

Add 4-5 donuts ( if u are making mini donuts , else just 2 at a time) to the oil and cook for about 1-2 mins on each side. Strain the donuts and place them aside.

For the Choclate Glaze
  • In a sauce pan , melt the butter. Remove from heat and add the cocoa. Stir in milk and vanilla essence. Add in the powdered sugar and mix well. To adjust the thickness, you can add more milk.
  • Dunk each donut in the chocolate glaze and let it cool for 15-20 mins.
  • Serve
